BWCAW

BWCAW

BWCAW, or Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, is the official designation of the million-acre designated wilderness area, much of which surrounds the upper areas of the Gunflint Trail. Within its borders are more than 1,000 lakes, 2,200 campsites and 1,500 miles of canoe routes. Enough to keep any of us busy for a while.

As a managed and protected wilderness area, permits are required and a variety of rules apply. Wilderness canoeing and camping usually utilizes lighter gear, incorporates dried foods with fresh, and requires advance reservations so the quota of folks entering at any given point on any given day is not exceeded. Looking for some help with this?

Use a canoe outfitter to help you plan your trip, outfit you with the essentials require and luxuries you desire, get your permit, and even go along to help if you'd like. Find a complete list of outfitters at NorthShoreVisitor.com/outfitters.

We'd love to be your base camp before departure and after your trip. Let us provide you a good night sleep to kick off a safe and successful canoe trip. And we can be the hot shower, cold beverage, dry gear you're looking for when you come out of the woods.
