The Hjørdis & Scenic Airplane Rides

The Hjørdis

You’ve been skirting the shore of Lake Superior for two hours to get here. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get out on the lake? Feel what it’s like to be on all that water? Reverse things and view the shoreline from the lake? An easy way to do this is aboard the 50-foot schooner, the Hjørdis, sailing out of North House Folk School on the harbor. Schooner outings are offered daily and include an overview about sailing, a tour of the harbor, and weather permitting, a sail into the big lake. The Hjørdis sails from late May through early October and is used for sailing classes, sunset sails and full moon sails, too. Stop by North House or get details online. Visit Website

Scenic Airplane Tours

Anderson Aero

For a completely different perspective, hop aboard a float plane and fly over the area. Sky Dan takes off out of the Grand Marais harbor for tours running 20 to 90 minutes. From the window of the plane you will gain a sense of the remoteness and topography of the forests and lakes that surround Grand Marais. Let Dan know what you’re interested in or ask for a recommendation. Some great options include flying up the Devil Track River canyon, over Pincushion Mountain and the village and harbor; a Lake Superior shoreline tour; his famous moose scouting flight; along Lake Superior and up the Brule River canyon and over the Devil’s Kettle; over inland forests including Eagle Mountain, the highest point in Minnesota; and, a cruise along the U.S. – Canadian border. Breaking News from Lutsen Mountains – Ski Season Extended Thru May 4! “As yet another spring storm hit the North Shore, Lutsen has now recorded over 13 feet of snowfall this season. With a base of 2 to 3 feet on all primary runs and reserve piles virtually untouched, the snow conditions are unprecedented for late April. Meanwhile, the forecast is ideal for spring skiing with highs in the mid 40’s and lows below freezing for the extended outlook. With such ideal conditions we are opting to remain open through the first weekend in May! Lutsen Mountains is open Easter weekend with 3 mountains, 5 lifts and 60+ runs. We plan to scale back operations to one lift on Eagle Mountain with 12 – 15 runs for an additional two weekends. Bridge lift is scheduled for April 26 & 27 and May 3 & 4, providing a selection of green, blue and black diamond runs. We will offer 2 for 1 (2 days for the price of 1) as our online ticket rate.” Now this is Spring Skiing! Get a tan while you ski - the unbelievable winter snowfall is a skier's best friend! ...
