The Hjørdis & Scenic Airplane Rides

The Hjørdis

You’ve been skirting the shore of Lake Superior for two hours to get here. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get out on the lake? Feel what it’s like to be on all that water? Reverse things and view the shoreline from the lake? An easy way to do this is aboard the 50-foot schooner, the Hjørdis, sailing out of North House Folk School on the harbor. Schooner outings are offered daily and include an overview about sailing, a tour of the harbor, and weather permitting, a sail into the big lake. The Hjørdis sails from late May through early October and is used for sailing classes, sunset sails and full moon sails, too. Stop by North House or get details online. Visit Website

See the crystal clear waters of Lake Superior, the Sawtooth Mountains, Isle Royale National Park, Cascade River state Park, Devil Track Canyon, Brule River’s Devil’s Kettle and many other sights along the shore, including picturesque Grand Marais harbor. The Gunflint Trail and BWCA W lakes provide a perspective of the vast wilderness spreading for miles into Canada. Moose Mountain at 2301 feet above sea level is Minnesota’s highest point. There is always potential for moose and other wildlife sightings. The fall colors are spectacular from above. East Bay Suites in Grand Marais

Wow... #GrandMaraisHarbor #onlyinMN ... See MoreSee Less

Grand Marais Aerial Panoramic Make sure you view this one big. I uploaded a 2,000 pixel version which should max most screens out there. Consider this a rough draft. I'm trying a few new editing techniques to get exactly what I want. This didn't turn out bad, but I want to see if I can get it to look even better. This is a 27 photo composite panoramic image. I took 3 rows of 3 shots and bracketed 3 exposures of each shot. Then I blended everything together in Adobe Lightroom. It took the computer some effort to get the composite finished -- 40 minutes of effort. Looks like I need a computer upgrade if I'm going to get this technique down. I'll be teaching this technique in my Lightroom class in November. Just a few spaces left.
