Biking

East Bay Suites has a number of bikes perfect for riding around town. We even have a bike and trailer so you can tote the littlest ones around with you. Stop by the front desk and ask about availability. If you’re looking for additional bikes, off-road bikes or tandem bikes, Superior North Outdoor Center, just a block-and-a-half away, rents bikes, racks, car carriers and trailers.

Around Town

Clip on your helmet, hop on your bike and ride west through downtown along the bike lanes to the edge of the paved Gitchi Gami Bike Trail [GGTA.org] and continue up the hill and out to the edge of town. Stops along the way include the Donut Shop, a side ride through the Grand Marais Rec Area, the Mini-Golf course, and the US Forest Service where you can stop in and learn about the Superior National Forest, get a drink of water and use the bathroom. Round trip is 3.75 miles without the side trip. Another option is to ride up to the stoplights – there’s only one set – on Highway 61 and explore the residential side of town.

Pincushion Mountain Trails

If you’re looking for some off-road biking, we recommend riding the network of trails at Pincushion Mountain, just 4 miles up the hill from East Bay Suites. PincushionTrails.org

"Spring Ice and Rainbow at High Falls" It's that glorious time of year for waterfall watching along the north shore of Lake Superior! Especially at High Falls in Grand Portage State Park, arguably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state of Minnesota (not to mention the tallest!). This photo was taken yesterday morning after a stretch of several cold days where the high temperature was in the mid to upper 30's. The colder temps meant that at night the spray from the waterfall was freezing to everything that it landed on, coating everything along the gorge walls in a thick layer of ice. It makes for a beautiful scene on a sunny morning thanks to the added effect of a rainbow! I used a 6-stop neutral-density filter to slow down the exposure to 2 seconds and blur the movement of the water. The forecast is looking pretty nice for the weekend so better head up the shore and check out the waterfalls! If you enjoyed this photo, please hit the "Share" button!
