Artists Point

Artists Point

There’s a little patch of green relief breaking the horizon line where the endless blue sky meets the illusionary infinity of the big lake. It is Artist Point, a little connected island that allows you to be out on the lake without ever entering the water. From the door of your suite to the center of the island is less than a half mile. Actually it’s not an island, but a tombolo, an island connected to shore via a gravel bar. Artist Point is our downtown woods. Within a few minutes, you can be on the quiet lakeside shoreline. Pick a comfy spot and just sit and look at the lake. Or skip stones. Or take photos. Or read a book. Or stack rocks. Or write a postcard. Or a novel. After a while you may want to meander to the east end and soak up sun. Or catch the spray of waves. Or daydream. Or sketch. Or paint. Or consider taking up sailing. Of course, all of this can be repeated on the East Bay side of Artist Point. For a little excitement, you can walk the east breakwall out to the Grand Marais Lighthouse and admire the village views from this vantage point. Not that it’s strenuous, but there’s a custard shop with a rooftop deck midway between Artist Point and your place at East Bay Suites. Just a suggestion.

Ahh..... ... See MoreSee Less

Last night and early this morning the northern lights put on a nice little display. If you have plans for leaf peeping on the North Shore this weekend, keep your eyes on the night sky. Chances are good for more aurora activity. 10/1/2015

Oh Oberg! ... See MoreSee Less

Sawtooth Mountains and distant Grand Marais, MN viewed from Oberg Mountain this evening. Lots of green and yellow on the lake side but the maples are looking great off to my left. The Oberg hike is almost prime for fall color viewing. I think I did this hike on September 26th last year and felt I was a day or two late for peak color. Things are running late this year. Fantastic sunset hike tonight. 9/30/2015
