In The Heart of Grand Marais
Grand Marais Arts Festival
Event Details
Second weekend in July ~ Downtown Grand Marais on the harbor
For artists, Grand Marais is inspiration nirvana. Ever-changing Lake Superior, towering white pines, diminutive blue bells, smooth grey blue cobblestones, rough-edged red rhyolite, elusive wolves, gangly moose, sleek otters, crashing waves, rustling leaves. A showcase for the results of these inspirations is the annual Arts Festival.
Artists
Photography, painting, clay, woodcuts, stone and metal work, jewelry, fiber arts, ceramics, wood, glass and mixed media fine arts are displayed and sold down the center of main street [Wisconsin St. - the street East Bay Suites is on]. A public reception takes place Friday night at the Johnson Heritage Post [JHP] with sales all day Saturday and Sunday.
Music & Food
And a festival just isn't a festival without a little music and some good food. Restaurants provide fine fare complemented by street vendors' offerings and the Hospital Auxillary's pie social at the Johnson Heritage Post. Musicians onstage in Harbor Park and the local radio station, WTIP, supply a musical backdrop for your weekend of browsing.
Fiber Arts Demonstration
Include a stop on the front lawn of the JHP where the local Fiber Arts Guild can be found spinning, weaving, knitting and explaining the details of their arts. Come back the first weekend in December for the Guild's annual Holiday Sale, housed at the Art Colony. The line forms just before 9:00 am for this popular event.
